James Winfield Nance passed away at his residence at the Belmont in Dallas, Texas, on September 17, 2022, at the age of 99. Though he lived in many places during his 36-year engineering career with ExxonMobil and he traveled extensively, he was a lifelong Texan to the core.
Born in Dallas July 26, 1923, the son of Myrtle Lillian and Sydney Johnson Nance, he graduated from Texas A&M and served as a pilot during WWII. Jim was a POW near the end of the war and was honored many times over the years for his service. He was among the last of the "Greatest Generation," whose lives were shaped by the Depression and the largest war in history.
He married Lina Jane (Lindy) Bigelow on August 20, 1950. Lindy passed away in January of 2017. He is survived by their children Rebecca Laura Nance (Oklahoma City), Cynthia Lee Nance (Denver, Colorado), James Wesley Nance (Whitney, Texas), Carlton Ray Nance (Dallas, Texas), and Jennifer Marie Nance (Round Top, Texas). Their grandchildren: Timothy Nance of New York City, Sarah Nance Brown of Wylie, Texas, Kristina Nicole Nance of Austin, Texas, and Lucinda Jolley of Oklahoma City. Their great-grandchildren: Faith Nance of Round Top, Texas, Sophia Nance, also of Round Top, Amelia Nance of New York City, and Jaxon Brown of Wylie, Texas.
Jim will be remembered for his military heroism, the loving care he and Lindy gave to her remarkable mother Saralyn Pratt and her aunts Rebecca Youngkin and Mary Buchanan, for his huge enjoyment of travel, and for the help and support he gave to his entire family. As his son James Wesley Nance said, his passing marks the end of an era for his family as well as for the country he served so well.
Services will be held on Thursday, September 22, at 2:00 at the Thiele Cooper Funeral Home in Yoakum, Texas.
