James was born July 5, 1934 at the family farm to Edward & Elizabeth (Dohman) Marx. Jim attended rural school through the 8th grade and graduated from Bristol High School in 1952.
Jim farmed West of Bristol with his dad and purchased his first farm from Ellsworth and Betty Hanson in 1959. In 1966, they moved to the Marx Farm (3rd Generation of Marxes to live there). In 1973, he purchased the Marx Farm. He had milk, cows, pigs, chickens, and crops. The farm was his pride and joy.
Jim also was a crop adjuster for Federal Crop Insurance in Day County and the surrounding area. Later, he purchased the agency located in Aberdeen. He retired from crop insurance in 1999.
