James E. Mangum
June 19, 1927-October 14, 2017
James Edwin Mangum, age 90, passed away the evening of October 14, 2017, at home with his family by his side. He is the beloved husband of Shirley, father of nine, grandfather to 47, great-grandfather to 123, and great-great grandfather to one. Each one knew they were his favorite. Dad married our mom, Shirley Rae Arnold, in the Manti Temple on June 19, 1947, and they enjoyed 70 years by each other's side. His family was his greatest treasure and his greatest accomplishment.
Born June 19, 1927, in Helper, Utah, to John Darwin and Leola Maryann Grange Mangum, dad grew up in Huntington, Utah. He served in the U.S. Navy in the final months of World War II. He and Shirley brought their young family to Orem, Utah, in 1953, and made it their home. Dad taught school at Geneva Elementary, Lincoln and Orem High Schools where he was regularly voted "most popular teacher" by the students. He left teaching, a profession he loved, to expand his plumbing contracting business to better support his growing family.
Our dad's life was one of service; to family, community and church. He served as Mayor of Orem City for 10 years overseeing the coming of University Mall and the construction of the City Hall and Recreation Center. His church service included bishop of the Orem 3rd Ward, stake president of the Orem West Stake, counselor to two presidents at the Provo MTC, first president of the Arizona Tucson Mission (1990-1993), and missions at the Toronto Temple and the Nauvoo Temple. He served as a sealer in the Mount Timpanogos Temple until his health prevented it.
Dad is survived by his sweetheart, Shirley; nine children and their spouses, Kirt (Marcia) Mangum, Necia (Lyle) Burrup, Kevin (Mary) Mangum, Bart (Renae) Mangum, Kaye (Tom) Macdonald, Jamie (Kim) Anderson, Lori (Dave) McGinn, Craig (Nick Chugg) Mangum, Brad (Jane) Mangum; 47 grandchildren; 123 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, and six siblings, Marjorie Tomsic, Mamie Noyes, Donald Mangum, Monty Mangum, Rose Ungerman, and Carol Norton. He was preceded in death by three grandchildren, David James Mangum, Andria Burrup, and Brittney Mangum Drakulich; his parents, and three siblings, Clark Mangum, Jerry Mangum and Jean Killpack.
The family would like to express our thanks to the care givers who have given such excellent care to dad over the past 10 months.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the LDS Church Humanitarian Fund.
