Mr. James Leon Magness, 82, of Gore Springs, MS, passed away at Gilmore Memorial Medical Center in Amory, MS on Thursday, January 1, 2021, of complications from COVID-19. He was born April 24, 1938 in Derma, MS.
James was a cotton and soybean farmer for 34 years. He was a faithful member of Red Hill Church of Christ. While in his sixties, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of learning to fly. He obtained his pilot's license, bought a plane, and flew recreationally for several years. He continued his lifelong hobby of fine wood working right up to the time of his illness.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Johnson Magness; a son, Jeffrey Magness of Selma, AL; 2 daughters, Melanie (William) Cook of Spring Grove, IL, and Diana (Robert) Todd of Gore Springs; granddaughter, Jade Sivilisaine of Selma, Al; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Beth (Joe) Barnett of Courtland, MS and Joan (Donald) Pullen of Raymond, MS; brother, David Magness of Big Creek, MS; and 6 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, James H. Magness, his mother, Rosa Pauline Holloway Magness, and a brother, John Paul Magness.
Graveside service will be held at Bethany Memorial Cemetery in Slate Springs on Monday, January 4, 2021, at 2:00pm with Bro. Cole Surrell officiating.
Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Magness, William Cook, and Robert Todd.
