James F. Johnson Jr., 66, died on July 9, 2023 at his home in Brentwood after a lengthy illness. He was born in Stoneham, MA on February 3, 1957, the son of the late James F. Johnson Sr. and June (Borland) Johnson.
A talented hockey player, he was a graduate of Stoneham High School and attended Boston State College, where he played hockey. He was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a case manager for the Department of Transitional Assistance for 35 years. After his retirement, he worked briefly as a toll booth attendant for the NH Department of Transportation. He also played many years of men's softball for the MA State Welfare Department Team.
James was very involved in his community and in local politics. He was on the board of the Government Integrity Project. As a volunteer, he enjoyed playing the role of Santa Claus every Christmas for many charitable organizations. He was considered by many to be a true friend and was someone who always wanted to help others. The most important thing to him throughout his life was his family.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Joann Merrill-Johnson of Brentwood, NH; two daughters, Meghan Erfourth and her spouse Petty Officer Devin, of Baltimore, MD; and Jacqueline Johnson and her fianc? Zachary Duda of Brentwood, NH; his sister Julie Campisani and her spouse Peter of Narragansett, RI; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog Howie.
