James Lloyd Hammock (Hammock), of Longview, Texas was born on May 24, 1921 and while surrounded by loving family members, passed away on August 10, 2018. He was one of eight children by Jim Lee and Susie Evelyn Lewis Hammock of O'Farrell, Texas.
Pvt. Hammock of the 349th Infantry Company, proudly served as a sharpshooter in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. During his time in the EAME Theater, he earned the Bronze Star and received a Purple Heart for injuries that he endured in the Italian Po River Valley. Upon his return from WWII, he was among the first initial attendees at Le Tourneau University. He remained employed with Le Tourneau for many years. He then became a Master Machinist for Trailmobile East Texas until the company closed.
James was very active during his 97 years spent on earth. He was active in many civic and veteran organizations. Two of his most valued associations were his role as a Shriner and a 32nd degree Mason. He was an accomplished gardener and loved to show off his beautiful garden. He was successful with grafting trees and working with genera tracing back well over one hundred years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ann Hammock of Longview, Texas and beloved daughter, Cynthia Stratton Prest of Shreveport, Louisiana.
Left to cherish his memories are his surviving children, daughter Sue Carol Jackson Speegle of New Orleans, La and son James Lloyd Hammock of Rosenberg, Tx, and grandchildren: Katherine Jackson Moreno of Shreveport (her children, Sara Maines, Victoria Greenwood & Robert Greenwood of Shreveport, La.); Jay Stratton and wife Michelle of Mechanicsville, MD.; Michael Scott Stratton and wife Amy of Henderson, Texas; Christopher Stratton and wife Anita of Shreveport, La.; Michael Hammock and wife Jaime of Grand Prairie Texas; Jaime Hammock of Fort Gibson Ok.; Stephanie Hammock Backer of Tacoma, WA.; Jenny Koerth and husband Scott; Mandy Newhouse and husband Kenneth; and Patty Wilson, all of Texas, and many great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to the staff at the VA Hospital and Promise Healthcare in Shreveport, Longview Community Ministries, as well as to David Logan, Kathy Moreno and Gerald Lee Hammock for their compassionate care of James.
Visitation will be held on August 18, 2018 from 12-1:30 at Hanner Funeral Home, 103 W. Main St. Atlanta, Texas 75551 with procession following to Center Grove Cemetery, O'Farrell, Texas. Graveside Service begins at 2:00pm.
