James Clark Gilbert, 83, of Goldsboro, NC, passed away peacefully at the ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, NC on October 24, 2022. Clark was born in Henry County, VA on March 28, 1939, to the late Harry Moir Gilbert and Verna Clark Hylton Gilbert.
Clark's family moved to Mt. Airy, NC early in his life. He graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1957 and attended Mars Hill Jr. College. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his Country proudly for 20 years. During his Air Force career, Clark was stationed at various Air Force bases in the United States and the Far East. His last deployment was at Da Nang Air Force base in the Republic of Vietnam. Clark was very proud to be a Vietnam veteran. After his retirement from the Air Force, he lived and worked at various locations in the US while using his Air Force training in his employment with a Defense Department civilian contractor.
During his retirement in Goldsboro, Clark pursued several hobbies and interests. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with his friends at Seymour-Johnson AFB golf course and at the Goldsboro Golf Course. Clark's other interests and hobbies included building and painting models of military aircraft in service concurrently with his Air Force career. He also traveled to numerous Civil War battlefield locations in pursuit of that historical interest. Clark was a very enthusiastic NASCAR fan.
Clark is survived by two brothers and two sisters, Jerry Gilbert and wife, Carolyn, of Winston-Salem, NC, Bill Gilbert, and wife Linda, of Richmond, VA, Barbara Homan, and husband, Ron, of Richmond, VA, Charlotte Self and husband, David, of Powhatan, VA. He also enjoyed many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A private service to celebrate Clark's life will be held on a later date. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be given to The Fisher House Foundation (fisherhouse.org).
