James O. Gates "J.O.", passed away peacefully Friday, August 20th 2021 at his home in Knoxville Tennessee. J.O. was born on July 6th 1921 in Cleveland, Tennessee. To the late Austin and Bertie Gates. He is survived by his beloved wife, Alma Sue Gates of seventy-nine years and sister, Flo Ella Smith. J.O. proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. He was active in Big Springs Baptist Church, Cleveland, TN and most recently at Calvary Baptist Church in Knoxville. J.O. had many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday August 29, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church on Kingston Pike with visitation to follow. Graveside service with Full Military Honors will be held 12:30 PM Monday, August 30, 2021 at East Tennessee State Veterans' Cemetery (Governor John Sevier Highway) The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Samaritan's Purse, https://www.samaritanspurse.org/our-ministry/donate-online/, P.O.
