James Gordon Hanson

EDWARDSBURG-
James Gordon Hanson passed peacefully in the early morning hours of July 23, 2022 after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's
Jim was born on May 8, 1935 and lived in South Bend until 4th grade, then moved to Edwardsburg, Michigan with his parents Iner & Lillian (Britland) Hanson, both deceased.
He graduated from Edwardsburg High School in 1953 and attended Western Michigan College for one year. He married his high school sweetheart, Margery Gunn on July 9, 1955; they lived in Edwardsburg throughout their 67 years of marriage.
As a teen Jim worked at Robertson's Department Store. He managed a Standard Oil Service Station in Edwardsburg throughout the late fifties and sixties and a Shell Station in Elkhart throughout the seventies and eighties. He then ran a charter boat on Lake Michigan out of New Buffalo fishing mainly for Salmon. He later worked at M&M Fabricating in Elkhart, retiring in 1996.
His interests included fishing, hunting, shooting trap and skeet, playing cards, snowmobiling, and spending time at his cabin on Big Bass Lake in Irons, MI. In old age, he enjoyed feeding the birds and wildlife, watching westerns on TV, and playing with his cat Callie.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children; Christine (Mark) Nelson and Kent Hanson, both of Edwardsburg and Gail (Drew) Johnson of Elkhart; two grandchildren Vicki (Luke) Leifer of Spokane, WA and Luke Hanson-Phipps of South Bend, and two great-grandchildren Zaden and Everly Leifer. His half-sister Peggy Krieger (Ward) and half-brother Bernard Ward preceded him in death.
Cremation has taken place and Jim's family will have their own private service.
