James Alton Davis III, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on August 1, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on April 1, 1942, in Richland, Georgia, James devoted his life to his family and community, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and generosity.
James was the son of James Alton Davis II and Romola (Collins) Bryson. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Judy Abbott Davis, who he was married to for 55 wonderful years before her passing. Together, they created a loving home filled with laughter and support. James is also preceded in death by his son, James Stanley Davis, his beloved granddaughter, Catherine Hand and his two brothers Allan Bryson and Dan Davis.
He is survived by his two devoted daughters, Davina Pettyjohn and Deanna Cathcart. James is also survived by his grandchildren: Anthony Hand, Jennifer Hand, Travis Hand, Chase Davis, Tristen Cathcart, Andrew Cathcart, and Gavin Fletcher. James is also survived by his five great-grandchildren: Austin Hand, Dalton Hand, Katelynn Hand, Roselynn Cathcart, and Jonathan Jansen, who brought him endless happiness in his later years. James is also remembered fondly by his significant other, Teresa Hunt, his five brothers, and several nieces and nephews.
James was an avid marathon runner. He loved attending NASCAR races and absolutely loved Georgia Tech football. James was a Dale Carnegie teacher as well. James was a proud veteran who served in the United States Navy for nine years. His commitment to helping others extended beyond his family; he was actively involved in his community as a Mason, Shriner, and Deacon, always seeking ways to lend a hand and uplift those around him.
James Alton Davis III will be remembered not only for his accomplishments and passions but also for his kind heart and unwavering support for his family and friends. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, let us hold close the memories of his love, his laughter, and his enduring spirit. He will be profoundly missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those he touched.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday August 9, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Scot Ward Funeral Services. The family will receive family and friends Friday August 8, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturday August 9, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the funeral home. A committal service will be held after the funeral at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery in Lithonia, GA.
