James Maxwell Davis
Help us celebrate James! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember James.
James (Jim) Maxwell Davis was born on October 8, 1933 in Shinnston, WV to Ralph and Virginia Parson Davis. He departed this life at the age of 87 on Friday, December 18, 2020 at his home in Dale City, Virginia after succumbing to congestive heart failure.
Jim grew up in the coal fields of West Virginia and would talk fondly of his time growing up, enjoying the outdoors with his friends hunting and fishing. He worked in the coal mines as a teenager before enlisting in the Army at the age of 17 where he served in the Corps of Engineers as a crane operator and painter. Upon his discharge from the military, he relocated his family to Fairfax County, Virginia where he worked as a meat-cutter for almost 30 years prior to his retirement.
Along with hunting and fishing, Jim followed the DC area sports teams; especially, the Redskins and Senators/Orioles/Nationals. Prior to his health declining Jim could be seen daily walking around his neighborhood with best friend Brutus "The Wonder Beagle!" Jim enjoyed sharing stories of Brutus' exploits, some of which bordered on the mythical.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, his brother Harold (Jake) Davis who was killed in action during the Korean war; his sisters Pauline and Margie, his daughter, Vickie Lynn Barr, his great-granddaughter Emily Barr McElroy, and his favorite four-legged son, Brutus.
Jim is survived by: his loving wife of 28 years, Gloria Helen Dawson Davis, of Dale City, VA; sister, Billie Sue Martin; son, Eddy Davis (Cindy) of Dale City, VA; son, Michael Davis (Marcy) of Colorado Springs, CO; stepdaughter Vickie Pittman (Gary) of Culpeper, VA; stepson, Michael Maddox (Denise), of Stafford, VA; stepson, Daniel Maddox, of Culpeper, VA; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at Mountcastle Funeral Home on December 28th, 2020 at 11:30 AM, with graveside services at Quantico National Cemetery at 2:00 PM. Live streaming will be made available for those who are unable to attend in person.
