Jack D. "Papa" Crossley, 89, of Rome passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on Monday, August 15, 2022 at his daughter's home in Stittville, NY.
He was born on July 26, 1933 in Gloversville, NY a son of the late Daniel and Lisa "Billie" (Sparling) Crossley. He was a graduate of Mayfield Central School. He served his country in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 as a Medical Specialist. PFC Crossley was honorably discharged and resumed his career with the Davey Tree Expert Company.
On September 12, 1953, he married Grace Kappenberg in Patchogue, NY on Long Island, beginning a blessed union of over 68 years filled with much love and devotion.
Jack was later employed by Niagara Mohawk as a Forester, retiring in 1994 after 27 years of dedicated service. He was a two-term Mayor of the Village of Mayfield in NY from 1967 to 1971 where he contributed many innovative improvements to the community. He was a member of the Mayfield Servicemen's Club and the Leon Roberts Post 161 American Legion in Holland Patent, NY.
He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who cherished the time that he spent with his family. He loved hunting and spending time at his camp on Elm Lake, he was a true outdoorsman and companion to his friends and family. His legacy to his children was to always do your absolute best to be a good citizen. He will be lovingly remembered as "Smiling Jack".
He is survived by his wife Grace Crossley of Rome, his children, Dana (Daniel) Cook of Taberg, NY, Kent (Deanna) Crossley of TN., Lori (Bruce) Schardt of CO., and Teri Niedzielski of Stittville, NY. He leaves his grandchildren, Erin (Christopher) Vona, Tracie Cook and fianc? Richard Forbes, Sarah (Sean) Hooper, Reed Crossley, Jaclyn (Randy) Cline, Jason (Joann) Niedzielski, Mark Niedzielski, Casmir (Melissa) Niedzielski, his great grandchildren, Evelyn, Delcan, Sofia, Autumn, Summer, Collins, and Edward. He leaves a brother Fay (Donna) Crossley of VA. He was predeceased by his son-in-law and friend Edward Niedzielski.
The family wishes to sincerely thank his loving health care aid Brittany, and Hospice & Palliative Care for the wonderful care and compassion given to Jack during his illness.
Funeral services will be held on August 30th at Stittville United Methodist Church, 9070 Main St. Stittville, NY with calling hours from 4 PM to 6 PM, followed by a service and refreshments.
Arrangements are with the Dimbleby Funeral Homes Inc. 40 Main St. Whitesboro.
