Isaac Nelson "Junior" Atkins Jr., 85, of Flint Hill, Virginia entered the joyful presence of his Savior on January 11, 2021. Junior was born on October 17, 1935 in the Shenandoah National Park close to Sperryville, Virginia, to the late Isaac Nelson Atkins Sr. and Lena Helen Atkins. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rosalie Clem Atkins, his brother Lynn Jackson Atkins, and sister Doris Ann Atkins.
Junior is survived by his daughter Carol Johnson and her husband C.B. Johnson Jr., both of Sperryville, Virginia; his son, David Atkins Sr. and his wife, Penny Atkins, both of Flint Hill, Virginia; and his daughter Cathy Ballantyne, of Warrenton, Virginia. Junior was also blessed with six grandchildren- Ashley Woodward and her husband Jon Woodward, Nicole Hanback and her husband Tucker Hanback, David Atkins Jr., Jake Ballantyne, Mikayla Johnson, and Eric Ballantyne, and well as two great grandchildren Harper and Oliver Hanback.
A natural farmer from a young age, Junior worked for the family farm his whole life. Along with being a full time farmer, he worked at Avtex Fiber for over 30 years. When Avtex was permanently closed he was employed by the Virginia Department of Transportation for several years prior to retirement. He was a founding member of the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, a member of the Flint Hill Baptist Church as well as regular attender of Blue Ridge Community Bible Church. Junior also serviced his country in the United States Army Reserves. While working at Avtex he met the love of his life, Rosalie, and they were married in April of 1960. Known as "Poley" to his friends, he enjoyed trout fishing and fish fries, deer hunting, spending time with his friends at Settle's and above all, spending time with his family. While quiet spoken, Junior will always be remembered for being an honorable, honest, and trustworthy man who was devoted to his family and his Lord.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone who reached out to Junior during his stay at the Lynn Care Center. Your cards, phone calls, and messages of encouragement touched him deeply. Sincerest thanks are also extended to the staff of the Lynn Care Center for your vigilant and compassionate care over the past several months, especially in the light of current COVID-19 restrictions.
The family invites friends of Junior to visit on Thursday January 14, 2021 at 1:00PM at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main Street Front Royal, Virginia, 22630. Services will be held at 2:00PM officiated by Pastor Dan Rogers and Pastor Jim Payne. Interment will take place at Flint Hill Cemetery following the service at Maddox Funeral Home.
