Irene Susanna (Wegner) Tittel, age 97, passed from this life on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at Midland Memorial Hospital. She was born June 18, 1927 in Caddo County, Oklahoma to the late Adolph and Erma Wegner. She later graduated high school and began working for Southwestern Bell. Irene married Dean Tittel in Great Bend, Kansas on November 19, 1950, and they enjoyed almost 64 years together before he passed in 2014.
After they married, they traveled the country following electrical construction jobs and eventually settled in Kansas while they raised two children. In 1976, they moved to Odessa, and she transferred to the local Southwestern Bell office (now AT&T). After retirement, she co-owned and operated Double T Instrument and Electrical with her husband. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and was very involved in the Permian Basin Genealogical Association for many years.
However, Irene's greatest roles were "Mom" and "Grandma". She was the epitome of a matriarch for her family, and she did everything she could for us and we're so grateful for her legacy. She was quite a spitfire, and you always knew where you stood with her. She was wise, thoughtful, and had the most sound advice. She role-modeled a strong dedication and persistence in her faith which is why her family remains so close to the Lord. She loved a good hymn and made sure the family's Christmas and Easter holidays were filled with togetherness, gratitude, and lots of food.
To her grandkids, she was the smartest woman we knew, and no one could pull a fast one on her. She was a very engaged grandmother who loved to read books (so many books), work on puzzles, and play games (especially Uno) with her grandkids and great grandkids.
She also loved to cook for her family, and we have so many memories of our favorite comfort foods that no one make like her, including her queso, chili, Thanksgiving stuffing, spaghetti, orange rolls, green salad, and getting a recipe from her was difficult because she knew it all by heart. Each grandchild had their favorite, and she always made sure they had all they wanted.
Even after her husband passed, she would meet weekly with a group of friends for breakfast and it was a highlight of her week, aside from a visit from a great grandchild or two. We are thankful her mind remained strong, but over the last year, her body struggled to keep up with her mind. It certainly took a village of family and caregivers to ensure she could stay in her home as long as possible. To those who helped care for her, we are so appreciative, and a mere thank you is not enough.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son: Mark Tittel and his wife Diane of Odessa; five grandchildren: Rachel Slaymaker and husband Adrian of Abilene, Jeffrey Whaley, Jennifer Dickman and husband Shawn, Lauren Mason and husband Brady, Kaitlyn Holcomb and husband Justin, all of Odessa; six great grandsons: Brendyn, Noah, Christopher, Luke, Ruger, and Levi; and two great granddaughters, Hannah and Jessa.
Preceded in death by her husband, Dean Tittel, and daughter, Susan Weems, and her 4 siblings.
The family will have a private graveside service at the Cross Plains Memorial Park.
