Hugh Hammond Schindel , 78 Feb 27, 1942 - Jan 11, 2021 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hugh Hammond Schindel on January 11, 2021, and rejoice that a child of God has gone home. He died surrounded by his family and in the arms of those who loved him.
Hugh was born on February 27, 1942 in Hagerstown, MD and spent his childhood in Halfway. He was a 1960 graduate of South Hagerstown High School. Hugh was a member of the Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren.
Hugh is survived by his wife and best friend of 58 years, Rayetta, and their three sons, Hugh (Rusty) Schindel II and wife Sherri, Kyle Schindel and wife Kelly, and Matthew Schindel and wife Maria. He also had 6 grandchildren: Amy Anand and husband Gagan, Benjiman Schindel and wife Samantha, Levi Schindel, Ellen Schindel, Anna Schindel, and John Schindel. He had two great-grandchildren: Kiran Anand and Wesson Schindel.
He is also survived by his brother Michael Schindel and wife Victoria, sister-in-law Vicki DeArmey, sister-in-law Rebecca Collinson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his father John R. Schindel, Jr., his mother Laura Virginia Hammond Schindel, and his brother John R. (Jack) Schindel III.
From a very young age, Hugh was involved in business. He sold Christmas trees at the South End Shopping Center for 26 years. He, along with his brother Jack, owned and operated The Martha Washington Candy and Ice Cream Shop. He was the longtime owner of the Antietam Paper Company as well as numerous car washes in Maryland and Pennsylvania. He always involved his sons in the businesses and enjoyed working alongside them.
Along with several other businessmen, Hugh acquired the Hagerstown Suns. That group went on to acquire the Frederick Keys, Delmarva Shorebirds, Bowie Baysox, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, York Revolution (Pennsylvania), Lancaster Barnstormers (Pennsylvania), Camden Riversharks (New Jersey), and Sugar Land Skeeters (Texas). Hugh loved minor league baseball because it gave him the opportunity to meet so many wonderful local people, celebrities, and even take in several games with the President of the United States.
Hugh was also past treasurer of Valley Little League, Washington County Junior League Football and CSL Athletic Association.
There will be a private family service on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 1:30 PM officiated by Rev. Gabe Dodd, for those wishing to view the service, it will be live streamed at www.twitch.tv/luckystarstudios. The family intends to host a celebration to honor Hugh's life in the months following the end of the current pandemic. The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Williamsport Retirement Village for all they do daily, not only for the family but also the entire community.
