Hugh "Bud" Spires went to be with his Lord and his beautiful wife Darlene on Friday May 13th at the age of 86.
Born on October 4, 1936, Bud was the youngest of eight children of George and Grace Spires. George was originally from Lancaster and Grace from Buchtel Ohio. They married in 1920 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church and later moved to Columbus where most of their children were born, including Bud. Born into a deeply Catholic family, Bud was devout to his Catholic faith. Bud was the last patriarch of the Spires clan, which numbered 56 grandchildren, 102 great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren at the time of his father's passing.
Bud married Doris A. Wolfe "Dottie" in October of 1957, and together they raised six wonderful children. Bud worked for 30 years at the Timken Roller Bearing Plant in Columbus as a mechanic. After living in Morgan County from 1970 to 1976, they moved to Bremen Ohio. They moved to Lancaster in 1993 and divorced in 1996.
Bud was blessed beyond his wildest dreams when he met (Linda) Darlene Hanson on a blind date and after a short courtship she said "Yes!" They married on August 1999, enjoying a blissful 22 year marriage. Darlene was the love of his life, sharing a faith in God and a love of family. They enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing card games, fishing, golf, traveling and taking care of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Darlene passed away unexpectedly in June 2021.
Bud was also a skilled carpenter, and spent many years in the woodshop on Bauman Hill Rd with his nephew and best friend Jerry Spires, and his wife Joanie. With Bud being the youngest of the eight children and Jerry the oldest of the 56 grandchildren, they were close in age and more brothers than uncle/nephew.
Bud and Darlene are survived by a combined 8 children, Jeff (Lisa) Spires, Beth Spires, Linda (Mike) Sheridan, Neva (Tony) Schmelzer, Scott (Sandy) Spires, Todd (Misti) Spires, Debi (Russ) Carder, and Lori Hanson, along with 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Bud is also survived by his brother-in-law Ray Garrison.
In addition to his wife Darlene and parents, George and Grace, Bud was predeceased by his seven siblings and their spouses: Jerry (Aleta) Spires, Joan (Don) Finneran, Lucille (Jack) Guehl, Ruth (Ed) Frost, George (Jan) Spires, Jean (June) Armintrout, Eileen Garrison and several niece and nephews.
Calling hours will be Wednesday May 18th from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00, with a family rosary at 5:30 and 7:30 Vigil service, at the Sheridan Funeral Home in Lancaster, Ohio. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday at 10:30am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church.
