Hubert R. Henderson made his final transition to our Lord in the early hours of October 1, 2024 in Lakewood, CO.
He spent the last 25 years in Golden, CO where he and his wife, Phyllis lived in the mountains. They were united in marriage in Streator, IL in 1968 and moved to Plymouth, MN where they made their home and raised their two daughters. They were members of Wayzata Community Church where Bert served on the church council.
Bert was born in Hollandale, MN on October 19, 1945. He was a graduate of Albert Lea High School, received his undergraduate from Luther College, and his MBA from Mankato State. He proudly served in the 1st Infantry in Vietnam on the Cambodian border and received a Bronze Star in 1969 for his Meritorious Service in a combat zone.
Throughout his career, Bert held various senior leadership positions in human resources at NCS, GE Capital, Baxter, Praxair, and Pioneer Natural Resources where he was known for his leadership guidance, benefit and compensation plan development, and coaching skills. He had a unique ability to bring out the best in people and inspire them to be their best selves. His passion for helping others and making a positive impact on the world was evident in everything he did. Bert's influence extended beyond the workplace, as he was always there for family and friends to offer a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, a word of encouragement or advice when needed, and the perfect joke to land his point. His kindness and caring nature touched the lives of countless people, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In retirement, he lived his life to the fullest every day: skiing double black diamonds in Vail, planning hunting trips, driving his motorcycle and Corvette, sailing in Miami, perfecting his golfing and tennis game, winning at bridge, investing, tracking politics and current events, and spending quality time as a Papa with his cherished grandchildren, Jack (17), Morgan (15), Caroline (11), and Adriana (8). Bert is also survived by his daughters Kelly Berge (Cody) and Tracy Avelar (Aaron), and his sisters Faye Hovde (David) and Janice Schwartz (Rodger).
He was preceded in death by his father Harold, mother Rosetta, and the love of his life, wife Phyllis.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 25, at Wayzata Community Church with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. at David Lee Funeral Home on Thursday, October 24. In honor of his final wishes, Bert will be buried alongside his parents in Albert Lea, MN at Graceland Cemetery.
While our hearts mourn the loss, we take comfort in knowing he is dancing with Phyllis in heaven, and no doubt winning together in golf tournaments and duplicate bridge.
