Mr. Hubert Howell "Herb" Brown, age 85, of Rome, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at his residence.
Mr. Brown was born in Bartow County, Georgia on April 17, 1937, son of the late Tom Brown and the late Effie Dupree Brown. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Brown and Ernest Brown, and by a sister, Clara Head. Mr. Brown was a veteran of the U. S. Army and also worked at the Pentagon. He was very patriotic and loved the U. S. and the flag and expected others to respect it also. Mr. Brown's work ethic was unparalleled. As a child he had to work hard in a sawmill and later worked in various occupations with his most notable being a barber in Rome at Herb's Barber Shop for 62 years until his retirement at the age of 82. During his time as a barber, he met many different people and had cut many generations of families' hair over the years. Mr. Brown loved people and had a way about him to make everyone feel important regardless of their political affiliation or religious beliefs. Herb loved to talk and had a larger-than-life personality and because of that many came to the barber shop not just for a haircut, but for the entertainment and to just hang out.
Mr. Brown was a faithful member of Second Avenue United Methodist Church for many years and had served on various boards and committees. He was a Mason and a Shriner and was an avid Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves fan. Mr. Brown loved horses and raised Quarter Horses for many years. He also loved Quail hunting and training bird dogs. His greatest joy in life came from his family. He loved is wife dearly and told everyone how beautiful she was and how much he loved her. He also loved his boys and grandchildren. Playing with his grandchildren brought him much happiness.
Survivors include his wife, Paula Cooper Brown; three sons, Brett Brown, Roswell, Brooke Brown (Stephanie), Rome, and Brandon Brown (Kristi), Canton; seven grandchildren, Brittany, Bayleigh, Braeden, Cooper, Blake, Brooklyn, and Bryce Brown; a sister, Shirley Robbins (Tom); several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes Herb will be cremated. The family will have a memorial service on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 2pm at Second Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. Millie Kim officiating. They will have a reception for family and friends immediately following the service at the church.
