Professor Howard Martin Rebach, 88, of Salisbury passed away Thursday, October 31, 2024 at Peregrine Senior Living. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary Rebach. Born in Brooklyn New York but raised in Washington DC, he always considered himself a DC native and delighted in showing others around the city.
Howard knew he wanted to be a college professor from the very first time he stepped in front of a class as an adjunct professor. By the time he retired as a full professor from the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at the end of the 2015 spring semester, he had achieved that goal.
His career as a Sociology professor at UMES spanned 43 years and touched thousands of lives. Prior to coming to UMES, Professor Rebach taught in the Department of Speech Communication at the University of Maryland, College Park and in the Department of Speech at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. In addition, he was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and had worked for many years as a mental health clinician in both public and private settings.
Howard has a broad background in the social sciences. He completed his Ph.D. in communications at Michigan State University, a MA in Speech Communication and a BA in Education at the University of Maryland, College Park. His clinical training includes an MSW from the School of Social Work and Community Planning, University of Maryland at Baltimore and a Dipl. Psy. From the Department of Psychiatry at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London University, London, U.K.
When Professor Rebach came to UMES in 1972, the school was growing and changing and he wanted to be a part of it. His interdisciplinary background was central to the innovations he brought to the Department of Social Sciences. In his first years at UMES he was responsible for establishing the sociology program within the department, serving as department chairman from 1972 through 1974. In 1983, Howard developed the Criminal Justice Program which was housed, at that time, within the Department of Social Sciences. Five years later, in 1988, he was instrumental in establishing the Joint Social Work Sociology Program with Salisbury University. This innovative program allowed students at both universities to obtain both sociology and social work degrees.
Although a lot of who he was involved being in the educational setting, he also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and driving his vintage Mustang. He was a Civil War history buff and for many years had a cabin near Gettysburg Pennsylvania.
Howard is survived by his wife of 37 years, Katherine Rebach, two sons, Bob Rebach (Suzie) and Hank Rebach (Donna), a daughter, Siobhann Williams, grandsons, Caz and Zack, and sister, Gerry Rebach.
