Herman "Herm" J. Matulonis, 96, died Sunday, April 11, 2021, surrounded by his family.
He was born January 4, 1925, in Proctorsville, Vt, the son of Ignatz George Matulonis and Violet Bressette Matulonis. He attended Ludlow High School.
Herman served in the Navy as a signalman aboard merchant marine ships during World War II. Upon returning from the war, he worked in the textile mill in Ludlow, and then Woodruff Motors in Springfield, before establishing Matulonis Auto Body there - a business he proudly oversaw into his 70's, and which his son Dan still operates today.
On Jan. 25, 1947, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" Blanchard, with whom he enjoyed 70 years of marriage. Herman hand-built their family home in Springfield, where they raised their four children. He loved nothing more than family gatherings, recounting the accomplishments of his grand-and-great-grandchildren, playing cribbage with his grandsons, shopping with his granddaughters, watching the Redsox, and Sunday drives with Betty and their dog.
Survivors include four children, Donna Golec, of North Springfield, David and Hilary Matulonis, of Scarborough, Maine, Deborah Matulonis, of White River Junction, and Daniel Matulonis, of Perkinsville; nine grandchildren, Andrea and Scott Watkins, Stacey and Phoebe Buskey, Brian and Michelle Golec, Sean and Monica Matulonis, Tracy and Erin Matulonis, Misty McCarty and Andrew Martin, Kylie McCarty, Tamara Matulonis and Alan Solis, and Nicholas and Melanie Matulonis; 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; two siblings, Calla and Norman Susee, of Walpole, NH, and Victor and Judy Matulonis of Springfield; and his beloved dog Scooter.
He was predeceased by his wife Betty; four brothers, Joseph, Arthur, Mitchell, and Iggy Matulonis; son-in-law Wayne Golec; and a great-grandson, Conner Buskey.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday April 18th at 1:00pm, in Oakland Cemetery in Springfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Springfield Humane Society, 401 Skitchewaug Trail, Springfield, VT 05156.
Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
