Herman Reynold "Rey" Lopez Sr., age 83, went peacefully to be with our Lord in his home surrounded by his family on January 31, 2022. He was born on September 25, 1938 in Santa Paula, California to Ben and Eva Lopez. Rey married his high school sweetheart, Juliette Caroline Baca, on February 13, 1960. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, before Juliette preceded him in death in January 2021.
Rey retired from the Southern California Gas Company after 42 years of dedicated service, beginning as a Meter Reader and retiring as a Commercial Appliance Service Technician. Public service was extremely important to Rey. During his career at the Gas Company, he volunteered his time as the Union representative to fellow employees. He felt very strongly that the employees should have fair and appropriate representation.
Rey was supportive of his children, coaching his son in the Santa Paula Little League and youth football, and holding various positions in youth sports organization boards. While his children and grandchildren attended high school, he volunteered his time at the annual Saint Bonaventure High School Fiesta and served as President of the Pan-Am Bus Club, providing youth from Santa Paula reasonable transportation to private schools in Ventura.
Rey loved his grandchildren. He enjoyed reading and researching any and all topics and then conducting informative discussions with his children and grandchildren. Rey loved John Wayne films, working on home improvement projects and sharing that knowledge with his son, son-in-law (Nico) and grandson (Sam). He was an avid supporter of his grandchildren in their activities, always cheering them on from the stands and usually wearing a hat from the school they were attending. Rey and his great-grandson, Owen, shared many adventures, including attending his Cub Scout promotions.
Welcoming him into heaven is his wife, Juliette, and his youngest daughter, Lucinda Kizer.
Rey is survived by his children Herman Reynold Lopez, Jr. (Stacey); Annette Engelhart (Nicolaas Sr.); and Juliette Marquez. He is also survived by his grandchildren April Sam (Samford); Alexandrio Marquez; Ashley Kizer; Elizabeth Everett (James); Joshua Marquez (Jessica); Alexandra Lopez (Vince); John-Reynold Lopez; Juliette Elisa Marquez; and Nicolaas Engelhart Jr.; and her great-grandchildren Owen Sam, Brandon Marquez, Bennett Marquez, and Harper Everett. Survivors also include his sister Maiya Herrera (William); and many beloved nephews, nieces and extended family.
A Memorial Mass will begin at 2:00pm on Saturday, March 19th, 2022 at Sacred Heart Church, 10800 Henderson Road, Ventura, California 93004.
