Herbert Hinton Campbell, of Dumfries, VA, a retired Navy sailor and businessman, died on January 19, 2021. At age 91, he was infinitely proud of his family and his long and full life. Herb was born to Herbert and Willie Powell Campbell on April 19, 1929. Growing up in Montebello, Virginia, the region remained home to Herb's favorite place, Afton Mountain, with its sweeping Blue Ridge Mountain views. He grew up with sister Iris, and brother Calvin, and established his road construction and property development company, Campbell Brothers. An engineer and natural leader, he cleared land to make way for enormous growth across Virginia and Maryland in the 1960s-90s, projects including Dulles Airport, Redskins Park, Dale City, and Sandy Point Park. He shared his business with his family, and later championed a project to develop his waterfront property into the Port of Dumfries.
Herb started his family in 1956 with the births of his eldest four children with Katherine Black Campbell. He later married Glenda Finley Campbell on August 1, 1980, and raised four more children. His eight children and eleven grandchildren were his joy. He was always a provider, teacher, and dreamer to all, with memories of him dancing the jitterbug at weddings and parties, and being quick to give a toast to good health. He also loved to share stories and be playful with his grandchildren, always ready with clappping, stomping and singing to get their attention.
He enjoyed reading, building, and having a nice meal with red wine and good company. Herb and Glenda designed and built several houses, and explored the world. They also explored Virginia wineries, accumulating an impressive collection of wines over the years.
Herb will be missed by his wife of 40 years, Glenda; his children Jeffrey Campbell (Gene Berry); Nan Coleman (Robert); Sheila Campbell; Scott Campbell; Scott Judd (Kathleen); Crystal McCliggott (John); Cara Craft (Colin); and Chad Campbell; his grandchildren Patrick, Jonathan, Catherine, Darcy, Mikayla, Shauna, Savanna, Jackson, Tate, Cecilia, and Emilia; sister Iris Morelli, and brother Calvin Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved aunt, Selena Powell Finley.
He will be interred on Wednesday, January 27th, at Quantico National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks instead that donations be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
