Herbert Lee Bacon passed away on Wednesday, the 6th of January, 2021, in Grand Junction, at the age of 90.
He was born January 24, 1930, in Bird City, Kansas, to E.L. and Oma Bacon. He studied economics at the University of Colorado where he received a bachelor's degree in 1951 and a master's degree in 1953.
He married his wife, Laura May, on August 31, 1951, and moved to Grand Junction in 1952 to join his father E. L. and brother, LeRoy, at the US Bank at 4th & Main. He held several positions, including chairman, president and CEO during his nearly four decades as a banker. He retired on December 31, 1989, after several mergers and name-changes over the years. He continued as a bank consultant in 1990 and 1991, and then retired again in 1992, but continued on as a Community Board Member of Wells Fargo.
Bacon was active in various community projects, a member of two Masonic Lodges, the Grand Junction Rotary Club, and the First United Methodist Church. He is a former chair and trustee of St. Mary's Hospital, former treasurer of the Goodwin Foundation, former chair of the Iliff School of Theology, and former president of the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in bringing United Way to the valley in 1959, and also helped form the Western Colorado Community Foundation.
In addition to his many philanthropic contributions, he was an avid traveler and photographer and visited nearly 70 countries throughout his lifetime with his wife, Laura May.
He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church and his strong faith in God was a source of strength, which remained so throughout his life. He was always ready with a handshake to strangers and friends alike, and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, E.L. and Oma Bacon (Dean), brother and sister-in-law, LeRoy and Wilma Bacon, and his beloved son, Brad (Claire). He is survived by his wife, Laura May (Berger) of 69 years; children, Steve, Andy (Noni), Amy (Hill) Don, Linda (Reid) Ersel; grandchildren, Laurie (Biebel) Jeremy and Chad Bacon, Matthew and Haley (Hill), Aaron and Sean (Reid) Michelle; great grandchildren, Landin, Mason and Daxten (Reid).
A private family service will be held at a later time. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice.
