Henry A. Smith, 95, of Lawrenceville, GA, a former resident of Milford, CT, entered eternal rest on January 22, 2021. Henry was born in Derby, CT on August 13, 1925 to the late Henry and Mary Persico Smith.
Henry was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years Lois Riso Smith, brother Robert Smith and sisters Elizabeth Ahrens and Dorothy Harlow. Henry is survived by his two children, daughter Susan Smith, of Milford, CT; son James Smith (Polly) of Suwanee, GA; and seven grandchildren, Alyssa Goldwitz of Milford, CT; Andrew Goldwitz of New York, NY; Aubree Goldwitz of San Clemente, CA; Rachel, Courtney, Daniel and Emily Smith of Suwanee, GA.
A veteran of World War II, Henry proudly served his country and he enlisted in the Navy just before his 18th birthday. Henry served in the Navy as a Seaman First Class aboard the United States Navy vessel USS Walt Whitman. He earned five medals during his two and a half years in the Navy before being Honorably discharged after World War II ended.
A music enthusiast, Henry was a fan of the Connecticut Hurricanes Drum and Bugle Corps, often traveling to attend their competitions. A lover of sports, especially hockey and football, Henry enjoyed attending NY Islanders games along with his grandson Andrew's hockey games and grandson Daniel's football and lacrosse games. Henry was an excellent athlete growing up playing football, basketball and baseball at Derby High School. Henry also loved cars, and owned just about every Lincoln model made including many Continentals and his immaculately kept 2008 Lincoln Town Car.
Henry will be remembered as quick witted (even at 95), an independent thinker, a contrarian who enjoyed being the instigator in debates, and most importantly as extremely loyal and generous to family and friends who earned his trust.
A very special and heartfelt thank you to Alethea Jacobus and Shimica & Gary Carter, who compassionately cared for Henry. The Smith family would also like to thank Kindred Home Health.
