Helen L. Hewett, 88, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2021 at the Atrium Health Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. She had been under the care and support of hospice for an extended period.
Helen was born on October 9, 1932 in Wellesley, Massachusetts to Anthony and Mary Paltrineri. She graduated from Wellesley High School. She met and fell in love with Carl Pearson Hewett from nearby Needham, and they married on July 24, 1954. After marriage, Helen spent many years at home as a devoted mother, caring for and raising her two children. In the 1970's, when living in Charlottesville, Virginia, she went to work as an administrative assistant at the University of Virginia. As the family moved to other areas, she continued her work as an administrative assistant at local at colleges, including the University of Richmond, Florida Atlantic University, and Washington University in St. Louis.
She and Carl retired to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina in 1996. They joined and became active members of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church until health issues slowed her down. She moved to the Merrywood on Park retirement community in Charlotte in June 2019. Helen loved her family and her grandchildren. As frequently as possible, she and Carl would make trips to attend school activities, concerts, and sporting events to support her grandchildren. Anyone who ever met her would also quickly find out that she loved Clemson football.
She is survived by her daughter Robyn Peterson of Durham, and son Carl (and Caroline) Hewett of Charlotte; five grandchildren JC Peterson, Kyle Peterson, Tony (and Tait) Hewett, Andrew Hewett, and Casey Hewett; two great-grandchildren Reese and Brooks; as well as her brother Henry (and Grace) Paltrineri of Marlboro, Massachusetts.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Hewett in March 2010 and her son-in-law John Peterson in May 2021.
A private graveside service for Helen and Carl will be held in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Details have not been finalized.
