Helen H. McElwee, 97, a resident at The American House in Keene, NH, died on February 26, 2021 in her residence from natural causes.
Mrs. McElwee was born in North Adams, Massachusetts on October 20,1923 to Mr. and Mrs. Raymon C. Hastings. She grew up in Leominster, Mass. and was a graduate of Leominster High School with the class of 1941. Mrs. McElwee graduated from the New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Boston, Mass., as a Registered Nurse.
Mrs. McElwee married her late husband Kenneth R. McElwee on April 26,1947; they were married for 65 years until his death in 2012. After marriage, they lived in North Attleboro, Mass. where they began their family and Mrs. McElwee began her long and accomplished career in education. She started her own nursery school, the Oak Crest Nursery School on Stanley Street in Attleboro Falls in the 1950's. She later began teaching elementary education in the public schools, including the Roosevelt Avenue School in North Attleboro. She continued her career as a Special Education teacher in both the towns of Foxboro and Attleboro and retired in 1987 as Superintendent of Schools for the Attleboro School Department.
Mrs. McElwee and her husband spent their retirement years in Tunbridge, VT, as well as winters in Twenty-Nine Palms, CA. They both enjoyed playing golf, visiting the casinos and most of all, time with their grandchildren.
Mrs. McElwee leaves her son, David McElwee and daughter-in-law, Robin of Guilford, VT and five grandchildren; Trisha Briand of Bristow, Virginia, Mark Mathis of Alexandria, Virginia, Molly Kropp of Westford, MA, Beth Bristol of Guilford, VT, and Phil Mathis of Fulshear, Texas. Mrs. McElwee was also very proud of her nine great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Jan Mathis.
Graveside committal services in Maplehurst Cemetery in Guilford, Vt. will be private for immediate family and close friends only.
