Helen Stevens Laury passed away on January 13, 2021 at the age of 93 while living in a retirement home in Atlanta, Georgia. She was born in Greenwich, Connecticut on April 9, 1927 and lived there for 25 years.
She graduated from Greenwich Academy in 1945 and from Endicott College (now Endicott University) in 1947 with a major in journalism. After graduating from Endicott, she moved to New York City where she worked for six years at several different units of the Time/Life group of companies. It was in New York City where she met and married Jack Laury from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. His work took them from New York to Buffalo, Philadelphia, Chicago, back to New York and finally to Atlanta where Jack finished his working years and entered retirement. In the years thereafter, Jack and Helen lived in Charlottesville, Virginia; Rome, Georgia; and finally ended up back in Atlanta to be closer to their children who reside there. Helen was a dedicated mother to her three children and a loving wife to her husband Jack. In her spare time, Helen's all-time favorite activity was attending classes to learn the fine art of painting porcelain china, and later, painting with water colors. Even with the loss of vision in one eye during her later life, she still enjoyed painting with the encouragement of her biggest fan, her husband Jack, and the support of a retired high school art teacher. Helen and Jack loved to travel and took full advantage of their retirement years to travel extensively in the United States, western Canada and in many parts of Europe. Helen is survived by her husband John T. Laury; her daughter and son-in-law Leslie and Jim Tarvin of Atlanta and their daughter Emily Tarvin of Fort Myers; her son and daughter-in-law Jack and Claire Laury and their daughters Hannah and Abby Laury, all in Atlanta; and her son and daughter-in-law Scott and Isadora Laury and their sons Rafael and Julian Laury of Vienna, Austria. A special Memorial Service was held in Helen's honor on January 23, 2021 at Church of the Redeemer in Atlanta, Georgia.
