Helen Lucille Kantzes of Salisbury, MD passed away on December 18, 2021 at home. She was 93. She was born in Baltimore to Elmer and Lillian Speake Eckardt on October 12, 1928. Her husband, James George Kantzes, preceded her in death on September 8, 2007. She also had a sister Mildred Bohannah who preceded her in death.
She attended the University of Maryland at College Park where she received her Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Microbiology. While working there as a teaching assistant, she met her husband, Jim. They lived in College Park where Jim received his PhD in Plant Pathology after which they settled in Salisbury, MD. They were happily married for 52 years.
She was a fine homemaker and dedicated mom to her three sons. She loved reading, discussing books, Nelson Eddy music and videos and working crossword puzzles. Other hobbies included cross stitching, sewing, painting with watercolors and baking wonderful cookies for Christmas.
Her grandchildren have treasured memories of the many things she did for them.
Over the years she tutored students in algebra and geometry. She had a sharp mind that she maintained to the end. Everyone wanted to be on her team when playing challenging board games, especially during the annual family crab feasts.
She is survived by three sons, John Emory Kantzes and his wife, Sally Seitzer Kantzes of Wilmington, DE, Robert Charles Kantzes and his wife, Tammy Lewis Kantzes of Salisbury, and Christopher Paul Kantzes and his wife, Amy Melcher of Minneapolis, MN. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Katherine Patricia Kantzes of Austin, TX, Kimberly Kantzes Tanner and her husband, Matthew Tanner, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Rachel Lillian Kantzes of Providence, RI, and Henry James Kantzes of Minneapolis, MN. She has four great grandchildren, Tucker Seitz Tanner, Fuller Ace Tanner, Darby Jane Tanner and Lee Michael Tanner, all of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
She attended St. Albans Episcopal Church for many years. A memorial service will be held there on January 15, 2022 at 11 o'clock.
