Nita, 89, Topeka, Kansas, died peacefully Sunday morning, February 14, 2021, at Aldersgate Village where she was receiving hospice care for the past several days. She exerted much effort against multiple medical problems over the last six years which finally weakened her and she could not remain at home since early January.
Nita was born April 16, 1931, in Cuthbert, Georgia, to George and Ethel Kuykendall. Her brothers were John Baker, James Baker, Louis Kuykendall and Bill Kuykendall. Nita's sisters were Florence McMillan, Lois Jahn and Elizabeth Read. Lib and Louis remain in Florida.
The family moved to Central Florida in her early years. Nita graduated from high school in Winter Garden, Florida, in 1949. She was "the girl with the Ipana smile" according to her yearbook. Nita was head cheerleader and a basketball player.
In 1962, she was secretary to the Chief of Nursing at Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando, Florida when Joseph Huston, M.D. came to start his medical internship. Somehow, mysteriously, these two noticed each other, quickly became friends and with the speed of a Kansas cyclone or a Florida hurricane, or both, could not ever separate again. They married January 5, 1963, and recently celebrated 58 years together; 52 of those years have been in Topeka with 45 on Marlboro Road. Following marriage, Nita's full-time job was at home.
Nita is survived by her husband; children, Russell Huston (Kim), Signal Mountain, Tennessee, Ronald Huston (Jenny), Hixon, Tennessee, Suzanne Martinez (David), Topeka, Jonathan Huston (Charla), Hixon, Timothy Huston (Giselle), Fairview, Tennessee, and Karen Huston-Kelly (Starnes), College Grove, Tennessee.; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by granddaughters, Jessie Huston and Sierra Martinez.
Nita had much more love than she ever needed to go around to all of her family and others. Her words, "I love you all, so much!" will be ringing in our ears forever. Nita practiced her Christian faith well. She was a member of Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church. Nita frequently told people that she regularly prayed for them. She has now upgraded her residence to Heaven where a room has been prepared for her, as described in John 14:1-3.
Nita will be greatly missed, but we are overjoyed that she is finished with years of suffering and is now in the presence of the Lord.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 2021, at Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church, 8345 SW 33rd Street, Topeka KS 66614. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2021, at the Church.
