Newton, NC -- Helen Howard Boone a long-time resident of Abernethy Laurel's retirement village died Sunday, January 31, 2021. Mrs. Boone was born January 12, 1928 to the late J.C. Howard and Florence Saunders Howard of Sherrills Ford, NC.
Mrs. Boone is a 1949 graduate of Appalachian State University, where she was May Queen in that same year. She taught at Long Creek Elementary School in Huntersville, NC before marrying Walter S. Boone in 1950 and moving to Harriman, TN. She became a homemaker at that time and became the mother of Steve and David. Her life was dedicated to being a mother, homemaker and serving others. She was described by many as a sweet southern lady and worked diligently throughout her life to make everyone feel comfortable, important, and appreciated. Helen loved to cook and was the consummate hostess. She was a talented artist and played the piano. Helen perfected the art of letter writing and wrote hundreds of letters throughout her life to her friends and family and anyone else that had touched her life. Helen was a friend to many and an amazing daughter, daughter-in-law, sister, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, and wife.
Helen and Walter met at Appalachian State University. Together they created a great love story that lasted for almost 70 years. Helen lived her last 14 years at Abernethy Laurels retirement village with husband Walter, first in a cottage and later in an apartment where they were loved and cared for by many wonderful staff members. The family is very appreciative and would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Abernethy Laurels that treated Helen like their own family.
Helen is survived by two sons Steve Boone and wife Kathleen Carpenter of Charlotte, NC and David Boone and wife Karen Boone of Conover, NC; three grandchildren, Jennifer Puff (Travis) of Cary, NC, Jonathan Boone (Melanie) of Charlotte, NC, and Jason Boone (Sarah) of Fort Mill, SC; six great grandchildren, Irelynn Puff, Livie Puff, Tessa Puff, Katie Hawkins (Josh), August Boone, Avett Walter Boone, and many other relatives throughout the country.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to: Rehobeth United Methodist Church (P.O. Box 356, Terrell, NC 28682) or United Church Homes & Services Foundation (102 Leonard Avenue, Newton, NC 28658). No public memorial service has been scheduled at this time.
