Helen Lucille Englar, longtime resident of Westminster MD, died Saturday, April 10, 2021, at the Goodwill Retirement Community in Grantsville, MD. Born February 29, 1924, in Garrett County, MD, Helen was a "Leap Year Baby" and celebrated her birthday enthusiastically every 4 years. Second of the five children of Orval Clayton and Emma (Brenneman) Glotfelty, she was predeceased by brothers, Robert and Dale, and nephew Scott Glotfelty. Helen graduated from the Grantsville High School in 1942, and from Frostburg State Teachers College in 1945. She earned her Master Degree while working as a teacher. She told great stories of college life when most of the young men were away in WWII. In her professional life, Helen was an elementary school teacher in Carroll County for more than 30 years. A teacher and a storyteller, she shared her love of history with her grandnieces and nephews by taking them on a "Maryland History Tour' weekend when they were in fourth grade. She enjoyed teaching younger generations about family history and genealogy. An avid naturalist, Helen loved sharing her love of nature, especially birds, wild flowers and hiking with family and friends. This love developed early with her ramblings through her family's farm fields and woods when she was growing up. The Baltimore Orioles had no more dedicated fan than Helen, who often watched or listened to the games while quilting one of her prize-winning works of art. A master quilter, she created treasured gifts for her family and friends. She was active in her community and church. She served as a board member on the Carroll County Arts Council, and was active in the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster. She enjoyed travel and exploring different parts of the world and learning about new cultures. She is survived by sons, Michael, of Westminster MD, and Courtney, of Accident, MD: sisters, Betty Hummel and Dorothy Quaintance; nine nieces and nephews, 13 great-nieces and nephews, and 4 great-great nieces and nephews. Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, MD, is assisting the family with arrangements.
