Hazel Naomi Clark Weaver was born on July 1, 1925, to William and Agnes (Turpin) Clark in Wetumka, Oklahoma. On Saturday, March 6, 2021, at the age of 95, Hazel departed Lyndale Memory Care in Abilene, Texas, to be perfectly healed and follow her Savior into eternal life.
While Hazel was in school in Sasakwa, she was often called out of class to sing at funerals. A member of the Greatest Generation, the hardship of the time shaped her into the resilient person she was. She told of riding in the back of a pick-up truck from Oklahoma to California where she and her father picked grapes. It was in California where she was a war bride and worked in the ship yards in 1944. In 1957 as a single mother, her brother and sister-in-law, Shealith and Bobbie Weaver Clark, matched her with J.D. Weaver. After dating one week, she brought her sons, Gary and Billy York, and J.D. brought his children, Glenda and James, together to marry and form their family on July 9, 1957. One year later, Teresa was born into what would become an enduring and blessed blended family. Family was the love of Hazel's life.
Hazel worked at the Shrimp Boat Restaurant and later at First National Bank in Odessa. She retired to help J.D. with bookkeeping for Weaver Trucking Company.
J.D. and Hazel were faithful members of Temple Baptist Church in Odessa until they moved to Abilene in 1994. Wylie Baptist Church became their church home then, where they enjoyed their Sunday School class and PEP Club. Hazel was a member of the Encouragers, a group of people she dearly loved. Participating until she was 90, she "toured" the local nursing homes singing hymns and encouraging the residents.
She was blessed to live independently in her home until December 2020. We are most grateful to Dr. Robert Streigler, Lyndale Memory Care, and Kinder Hearts Hospice who tenderly cared for Hazel these last few weeks.
She leaves to cherish her memory four children: Glenda Musser Kratzer of Katy, Gary (Jan) York of Williamsburg, Virginia, Billy (JoAnne) York of Abilene, and Teresa (Steve) Woodard of Abilene; and ten grandchildren: Billy Musser of Katy, Brent (Patty) Musser of Katy, Cindy Musser of Livingston, Bonnie (Dane) Widner of Odessa, Jaye (Chris) Nabarrette of Odessa, Marc (Alexandra) York of San Antonio, Brooks (Mary) York of Austin, Jennifer York of Georgetown, Jim (Jessica) Woodard of Lubbock and Katherine Woodard of Abilene, along with eighteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are Hazel's sister, Tressie Turner, of DeWitt, Iowa, and former daughter-in-Law, Charlene York of Georgetown.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, William and Agnes Clark; her husband, J.D. Weaver; son and daughter-in-law, James and Mary Weaver; son-in-law, Phil Kratzer, and brother, Shealith Clark.
The family will host a visitation from 6-8pm, Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 US HWY 277 S, Abilene, Texas. A graveside service, officiated by Mike Harkrider, pastor at Wylie Baptist Church, Abilene, Texas, will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Sunset Memorial Gardend 6801 I-20 BL, Odessa, Texas.
