Harry P. Stearns, Sr., 96, of Whitefield, died on January 25, 2021 after a period of declining health.
Harry was born on November 1, 1924, one of 10 children of Austin and Ida (Lowell) Stearns. He enjoyed growing up on the family farm on Paris Hill, Maine. Harry graduated from South Paris High School and the University of Maine, where he excelled in baseball and basketball. After high school, he played semi-pro baseball for an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. He coached youth basketball and taught science at several public and private schools, including Whitefield High School and White Mountains Regional High School. In his retirement, he enjoyed caring for his grandson, Patrick, gardening, reading, and sports.
Harry was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, June Baker Stearns. He is survived by three sisters, Ruth Shepardson, Isabelle Foss and Virginia Barden, all of Maine; three children, Harry Stearns and wife, Jan, of Thornton, NH; Tenley Bouton and husband, Mike, of Whitefield, NH; and Roger Stearns and wife, Christine, of New Boston, NH. He is also survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Patrick Villaume and partner Joshua Olivero of Easton, PA; Tyler Stearns, wife Lauren, and son Kieran and daughter Maia of Medford, OR; Andrew Stearns and fianc?e Stacy Friedman of Jamaica Plain-Boston, MA; Jenna Johnson and husband, R.J., and son Charlie of Savannah, GA; and Tara Stearns of Chelsea, MA; plus, many nieces and nephews.
Due to the current pandemic, a memorial service will take place at a later date. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
