Harry McKeehan King, Sr. January 1942 - December 28, 2024 Harry passed away in Bowling Green, KY after a long and courageous battle with dementia.
He will be remembered as a man who loved his family, his dogs, grand-dogs and NASCAR. Born in Florence, AL, Harry graduated from Coffee High School and Florence State University, studying accounting and served in ROTC. In 1962 he married Mary Katherine King, also from Florence and they had their first son, Harry, Jr. He joined the United States Army as a lieutenant after graduation and served one tour in Vietnam. Upon his return to civilian life, he dedicated himself to his career as an accountant, working for Genesco in Florence. They eventually relocated to Bowling Green, where he was an accountant for Fruit of the Loom. The Kings had another son, William King and spent the remainder of their years together there. He also worked for Lifeway, Shop NBC and was a deputy sheriff for Warren County, serving primarily in court security. This job was probably his favorite. He showed care and concern for those who came to night court and often those on trial would see him around town months later and thank him for his respect. Harry was an active member in the Lion's Club and was a mentor to several children in a program at a local elementary school. He was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church where Mary Katherine played organ for many years. He also attended Hillvue Heights Church. He and Mary Katherine cherished traveling with their family, particularly to NASCAR races in the southeastern United States, in support of the Petty Enterprises (STP) Team. When grand children came, Harry was a wonderful grandfather. A favorite activity was the King family Parcheesi tournament. A traveling trophy was even awarded to the winner. Harry Sr was preceded in death by his wife Mary Katherine, who passed away in 2020; his parents Mae and William King of Florence, AL, and his brother Harold King of Chicago, IL.
He is survived by his two sons Harry M King, Jr (Nancy) of Port St Lucie, FL and William J King (Liz) of Bowling Green; four grandchildren Rachel Liedkie (Josiah) of Florida, Alexander King (Meghan) of Connecticut, Gavin King and Gwen King both of Bowling Green and one great-grandson, Titus Liedkie, and nieces and nephews.
A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted into the care of the J.C, Kirby and Son Broadway Chapel.
