NEW ZION - Harry Leslie Devoe, Jr., widower of Mary Ruth Woods Devoe, died Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at The Gardens of Sumter.
Born December 8, 1933, in Providence, RI, he was a son of the late Harry Leslie Devoe and the late Margaret Ann Waterman Devoe. Harry was a 1955 graduate of Brown University and a 1962 graduate of the University of Virginia Law School. He was a US Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. Harry served as an aviator in the Naval Reserves and was stationed in Jacksonville, FL. He was a member of the VA 106 Gladiators, American Legion Post 149 in New Zion, the Turbeville Ruritan Club, the American Bar Association, and served as Public Defender for the 3rd District Judicial Circuit for over 20 years. Harry was past president of the Clarendon County Republican Party and he was of the Presbyterian faith.
He is survived by two sons, Ryan Woods Devoe and Leslie Waterman Devoe (Tiffany), both of New Zion; five grandchildren, Christian Scott Devoe (Chiharu), Jordan Woods Devoe (Wen), Rhen Waterman Devoe, Theran Woods Devoe and Mercy Windsor Devoe; three great grandchildren, Hatsuki, Mya and Mia; and two nephews, Thomas Edwin Gidley and David Waterman Gidley (Janine).
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan Epps Devoe; his twin sister, Margaret Waterman Devoe "Dazzle" Gidley; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Scott Devoe.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 22, 2021, at Sardinia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Zach Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in Midway Evangelical Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at Stephens Funeral Home.
