Harriet L. Camp
Harriet L. Camp, (88), of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2022, surrounded by her family in Richardson, Texas.
Born on March 4, 1934, in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, Harriet was the youngest child of Webster Nicholas Link and Matilda E. Ruth Link. She was a graduate of Coopersburg High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Special Education from Bloomsburg State Teachers College (Bloomsburg University), in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1957.
On June 13, 1959, Harriet was united in marriage to Billy P. Camp, of Atlanta, Georgia, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Coopersburg. Soon after they were married, Bill and Harriet moved to Athens, Georgia with Westinghouse Transformer Division and then returned to Pennsylvania a few years later. In 1972 Bill was instrumental in choosing Jefferson City, Missouri at the site of the new transformer manufacturing plant and the family moved to Missouri later that year. Harriet and Bill remained devoted to each other for 59 years until Bill's death in 2018.
Harriet enjoyed an active career in education. She was a Special Education teacher in Sharon, Pennsylvania and in Winder, Georgia. Once settled in Jefferson City, she served as the director of Goshorn Handicap Center; was a teacher at Vogelweid at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson City and was a substitute teacher at the time of her retirement.
Harriet was a member of the Jefferson City First United Methodist Church, the Women's Lioness, Learning in Retirement, and the Jefferson City Art Club, where she served as treasurer and historian. She also volunteered at Jefferson City's Samaritan Center and was a board member of the Special Learning Center.
Harriet loved the fine arts from an early age and loved to paint. Her favorite subjects were her grandchildren, landscapes and flowers. She enjoyed ceramics and several of her pieces are cherished heirlooms passed down to her children and grandchildren. She loved music and theatre and attended live performances wherever she and Bill lived. The Little Theater in Jefferson City was one of her favorites through the years.
She is survived by a daughter Cheryl R. Base (Thomas) of Acworth, Georgia; Gregory P. Camp of Jefferson City, Missouri; Roger W. Camp (Amy) of Richardson, Texas; Russell A. Camp (Ellen) of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren: Katherine Roberts (William), Christopher Base (Meagan), Kyle Base (Avary), Brian Camp, Julia Camp, Colin Camp, Callie Camp, Michael Camp, Emily Camp, and four great grandchildren, Samuel and Lucas Roberts, Abigail and Camden Base, a sister in law, Doris Wigley of Evans, Georgia and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Bill, she was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Thomas R. Link, killed in action in World War II, Arlington L. Link, Webster N. Link, Marian R. Engler, Valeria C. Shelly and Anna M. Weaver.
Visitation will be on Sunday, July 10th from 5-7 pm at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Funeral Service will be Monday, July 11th at 11am at Winkenhofer with burial following at 1:30 pm at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Fall in Jefferson City, Missouri.
