Harriet L. (Waters) Maynes
Harriet L. (Waters) Maynes, 97, passed away peacefully on April 3rd, 2022 with family by her side.
Harriet was born on December 1, 1924 at the family homestead in Prosper, Vermont to parents Robert C. Lewis and Laura (Perkins) Lewis.
She attended Prosper School and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1943, she was active in class politics and a member of the ski team.
After high school, she attended Mary Hitchcock Nursing School where she obtained her LPN degree.
She married her sailor, Phillip Waters on July 2nd, 1945. They lived in Woodstock and Bridgewater until building a home in Windsor in 1954. The couple had four children; Judy, John, Jeff and Joel.
Harriet was a mid-wife for Dr. Cram and delivered many babies in the homes across Windsor County in the "50's". She then went to work for Windsor Hospital and later Mt. Ascutney Hospital until her retirement in 2000.
After Phillips passing in 1983, Harriet went back to college and obtained her Master's degree as an RN at the age of 62. In 1994, she married Edward Maynes of Woodstock. The "young" couple happily resided in Windsor until Ed's death in 2006.Harriet was a member of the Old South Church in Windsor, VT. She loved volunteering with the wonderful people of the church for all of their functions. She was famous for her baked beans.
Harriet was also an avid hunter (successful we might add) - in 1970 she shot a 185 lb. 8-pt buck at the family camp in Rochester, VT. She dressed and dragged it out of the woods by herself. Hence, one of her favorite sayings was born - "I'm a tough old bird !"
Harriet was a lifetime member of the J.P. Larkin Country Club in Windsor, where she played golf from the 1960's until the age of 94; she also swam with friends a couple times a week at the Mt. Ascutney Pool.
Harriet also enjoyed her winters in Myrtle Beach with Ed and several of their friends. They enjoyed playing golf, breakfast gatherings, playing cards and cocktail parties. Harriet was a very caring person with a lovely smile and beautiful hazel eyes. We will all sincerely miss her.
Harriet is predeceased by her parents, her husband's Phil and Ed, son Jeff, grandson Thomas Fish, and 4 siblings: Margaret, John, Elsie and Rodney. She is survived by her children: Judy Longo and husband Alan of Bradford, VT; John Waters and wife Dianne of Reading, VT; Joel Waters and wife Charlotte of Plainfield, NH; Philip Maynes and wife Judy of Barnard, VT; Bruce Maynes and wife Jean of Barnard, VT; Elaine Maynes White and husband Charles of Corinth, VT; and Paul Maynes of Rio Rancho, NM. Also 15 grandchildren, many great grandchildren as well as great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
