Harold Overholt
Keysville, GA - Harold Overholt was born on February 3, 1937 in Virginia Beach, Virginia to Henry and Amanda (Stutzman) Overholt. He left us to be "present with the Lord" on February 9, 2021.
Dad spent his growing-up years in Virginia Beach and Hartville, Ohio. As a young adult he spent some time in Berlin, Germany, helping to build Friedensheim, a community center for assisting refugees and displaced war victims. After that he spent two years fulfilling his obligation to the government as a conscientious objector 1-W worker at Beltsville Agricultural Experiment Station in Beltsville, Maryland. He moved to northern Indiana in 1961 where he farmed. On August 2, 1964 he married Verna Bontrager, daughter of Raymond and Susanna Bontrager. He later worked for Borkholder Buildings and New Paris Silo Company before moving his young family to a dairy farm in central Wisconsin on March 1, 1973. Dad farmed in Wisconsin for 18 years, then he and Mom and youngest daughter, Jenn moved to Due West, South Carolina in 1991. Dad spent the next 25 years as a wholesale car dealer who would much rather make friends of his customers than to make money from them, and he relished peddling (and giving away!) good Wisconsin cheese to friends and strangers in the South. He also very much enjoyed working part time for his brother and nephews' business, Overholt Grading.
In November 2016 Dad experienced a stroke on his way to Utah (with Mom). After a week in the hospital and two weeks in rehab in Provo, Utah, the Lord granted Dad a full recovery, which was always a marvel to him and for which he was thankful to the Lord. More importantly than that was the fact that the Lord used this experience in Dad's life to restore Dad to Himself.
In Dad's later years he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and later kidney failure. Even through his weakness and inability to do much physical activity, Dad maintained a happy spirit, and he very much enjoyed communicating with his many friends and relatives and keeping up with news about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, three infant brothers and his brothers-in-law, Paul Yoder, John Hershberger, and Eli Yoder. Survivors include his wife, Verna of Keysville, Georgia, four children, Twila (John) Kulp of Mosinee, Wisconsin, Carlin Overholt of Stratford, Wisconsin, Marlita (Craig Haasl) Overholt of Pittsville, Wisconsin, and Janasue "Jenn" (Royal) Barnhart of Keysville, Georgia, ten beloved grandchildren, Darren (Brooke) Kulp, John Weston (Rebecca) Kulp, Natasha Kulp, Adrian Kulp, Shaylee Overholt, Giles, Mikayla, Gianna, Addison, and Karis Barnhart, and three great-grandchildren, Graham and Eleanora Kulp and Lydia Kulp, seven siblings, Esther (Paul) Yoder of Safford, Alabama, Ruth (John) Hershberger of Jesup, Georgia, Lewis (Mary Ellen) Overholt of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Naomi (Eli) Yoder of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Titus (Ellen) Overholt of Provo, Utah, Paul (Linda) Overholt of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Mary (Leon) Zook, Virginia Beach, Virginia, dozens of special nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation hours were from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Hephzibah Mennonite Church, located at 4248 Rheney Rd, Hephzibah, GA 30815. Funeral services were held at the same location on Sunday, February 14 at 3:00 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery. We as a family wish to thank all of our relatives and many friends and church family who have been so kind and supportive over the last month.
