Harold W. Gilbert , 80 May 15, 1940 - Jan 24, 2021 Harold W. Gilbert, 80, of Hagerstown, MD died January 24, 2021 at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown.
Born May 15, 1940 in Hagerstown, he was a son of the late Charles W. and Catherine V. (Palmer) Gilbert.
Harold was a 1958 graduate of Hagerstown High School. During highschool, for three years, he worked at Friendly Market, Hagerstown. Harold served three years in the US Army, and was stationed for 2 1/2 years in Germany. He worked from 1963 until 1966 at First National Bank of Hagerstown, and then that same year began employment at Mack Trucks, Hagerstown, retiring in 1998.
Harold volunteered for 14 years at the Hagerstown Salvation Army, serving lunches and also cooking. He enjoyed woodworking, his yearly trips to Germany, and working on pocket watches.
He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mercersburg, PA and was a former choir member. Member of Board of Directors of Hagerstown Sister City, Wesel, Germany and visited there twice. Member of Montgomery Township One Room School House Reunion planning committee.
Surviving family include his wife, Harriet E. (Hurd) Gilbert, whom he married May 9, 1964. Four children, Gabrielle S. Hosohle, Stuttgart, Germany, Marjorie Joy Wolford, Martinsburg, WV, Harold C. Gilbert, Frederick, MD and his girlfriend, Julie Burns, and Gerald C. (Gabi) Gilbert, Greencastle, PA. Four grandchildren and one great grandson. Four siblings, Bonnie Wheeler, Patricia Arillo, Sandra Baker, and Terry Gilbert.
Harold was preceded in death by two sisters, Heather Ann Gilbert and Mary C. Wagaman.
Funeral service 2:00 PM Thursday January 28, 2021 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 8 Linden Ave., Mercersburg, with Reverend Warren Heintzelman officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
Visitation one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church, with no public viewing.
The family requests the omission of flowers. Contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 37, Mercersburg, PA 17236.
