ROCKY MOUNT - Harold Donald Colston, age 83, died Saturday, June 27, 2020. He was born on January 10, 1937, in the Pleasant Grove Community of Nash County to the late James W. Colston and Beulah B. Colston. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Frances Colston Matthews; half-brothers, Neil E. Brantley, Carroll C. Colston and J. Randolph Colston; and his half-sisters, Daisy B. Rowe, Tempie C. Scott and Lucy C. Jackson.
Harold is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy W. Colston; sons, Jonathan D. Colston (wife, Sallie S. Colston) of Rocky Mount and Daniel L. Colston of Greensboro; and his granddaughter, Caroline Frances Colston. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was graduated from Spring Hope High School and attended NC State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He practiced engineering with the North Carolina State Highway Commission for three years, during which time he obtained his Registered Land Surveyor's license and his professional Engineer registration.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve, receiving an Honorable Discharge October 31, 1966.
He attended the school of Law at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where he received his Juris Doctor degree. He relocated to Rocky Mount in 1967 and practiced law with the law firm of Battle, Winslow Scott and Wiley, P.A. for twenty-three years, and then practiced as a solo practitioner for seventeen years. He retired from active practice December 31, 2007. His practice was primarily in the fields of real estate, business and corporate matters and estates. He was designated a Board Certified specialist in Real Estate Law, Residential, Commercial and Industrial Transactions by the North Carolina State Bar. He was a member of the North Carolina Bar Association where he served as Chairman of the Senior Lawyers Division for the 2009-2010 year.
He was a member of Englewood Presbyterian Church where he was a resting elder. He was a former member of the Rocky Mount Jaycees. He was a member of the Rocky Mount Rotary Club where he served as President for the 1997-1998 year. He was a member of the Rocky Mount Elks Lodge #1098. He served on the Advisory Board of Friends of Hospice of Nash General Hospital. He was also a Guardian ad Litem volunteer for the Seventh Judicial District. He was a former board member of Rocky Mount Academy, having served as President of the Board for the 1989-1991 years. He served on the Nash County Planning Board, beginning in 2013 until 2019.
A Private Family Interment will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery in Nashville. A Service to Celebrate Harold's Life will be held at a later date.
