Harley E. Johnson, age 78 of Verona, WI, formerly of Darlington, WI passed away Sunday, September 29, 2024, at UW-Hospital in Madison, WI. He was born September 26, 1946, in Monroe, WI, the son of Chester and Thelma (Jackson) Johnson. Harley grew up in Darlington and graduated from Darlington High School in 1964 and attended MATC in Madison with a degree in Construction. Following his graduation from MATC, he was drafted into the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany. After he was honorably discharged, he worked for Hinkins Construction in Darlington. In 1969, he moved to Madison where he worked in retail at Fish Building Supply and lastly at Menards until he retired.
Harley is survived by his sister: Linda (Daniel) Kerkman of Madison; his niece: Amanda (Paul) Tadych and her children, Hunter and Riley. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Harley attended the Grace Lutheran Church in Darlington. He was an avid reader of history and political figures. He especially enjoyed taking day trips to Devil's Lake State Park and hiking with his long time buddy Ray Terasa. He was a true Country & Western music fan with a little occasional Jazz. He enjoyed cheering on his favorite sports teams: Wisconsin Badgers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Green Bay Packers.
As per Harley's wishes, a private family funeral service will be held at Erickson Funeral Home (508 Main St., Darlington) with Rev. Nick McElrath officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington where military graveside rites will be accorded by Bates-O'Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington.
