Guadalupe D. Ortiz Sr., 87, of Lamesa, TX, passed away on June 17, 2022, in Greenwood, TX. Lupe was born in Yorktown, TX, the son of Domingo Ortiz and Carmelita Delgado, on March 11, 1935. He was raised by his grandfather Martin Ortiz and his grandmother Manuelita Ortiz. As a young man, he moved to Lamesa, TX and met the love of his life, Otila Galindo, at Martin's Department Store in 1960. Lupe and Otila were married August 12, 1961, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Lupe had multiple careers ranging from cotton picking as a child, to welding and ultimately as a truck driver delivering tractors across America. He loved to drive the open road and was an excellent copilot. His memory was something to be marveled; his recall, accurate and in fine detail, was astonishing. He could remember a restaurant from 30 years ago and boy did he have a way with people. He never met a stranger, and waitresses would remember him years after a stop. Partially it was his friendly manner, always with a smile, but mostly it was his heart that was memorable. Filled, in equal parts, with tenderness, thankfulness and a praise of God. He was happiest when he cultivated contentment alongside a spirit of gratitude, steeped in love. Give him a plate of oysters and a Big Red soda and he beamed with pleasure. This lived experience was on vibrant display to anyone around him who was watching. Add to it a few minutes of conversation and he was forever memorable. Lupe was preceded in death by his siblings Abundio Ortiz, Seferino Ortiz, Maclovio Ortiz, Ruben Ortiz, Teresa Lopez and his daughter Cynthia Ann Ortiz Ramirez. Lupe is survived by his wife Otila G. Ortiz; his children Guadalupe Ortiz Jr. and wife Linda, Jessie Joe Ortiz and wife Jessica, Sandra Phillips and husband Dane and Michael Ortiz and wife Stephanie; and his brother Oscar Ortiz and sister-in-law Estella. Lupe was blessed with a large family. He had 19 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Ramon Ramirez III, Ricardo Ramirez, Ramiro Hinojos, Jessie Joe Ortiz Jr., Brock Phillips, Seth Phillips and Dallas Phillips. Honorary Pallbearers will be his great grandsons Ramiro Hinojos II and Namir Ramirez. Funeral Mass was held at 10:00am on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, officiated by Father David Herrera. Interment followed at Serenity Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Midland. Arrangements are entrusted to Willowbrook Funeral Home of Midland. To place online condolences, please visit www.willowbrk.com.
