Grover Aaron Spears, Sr. of Hartsville, S.C. passed away on May 6 2023 at Morrell Rehab Center. Born on July 29,1934, in the Quietude area of Darlington County near Lamar to the late Aaron Cleveland Spears and late Sadie Webb Spears. The oldest of three children, he was preceded in death by his brother Olin Webb Spears and sister, Frances Ruth Spears. He was a graduate of Lamar High School (1953) then joined the US Navy serving as a Petty Officer 3rd Class during the Korean Campaign. After completing his military service he attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS in Business Administration.
Mr. Spears retired from Sonoco Products Company from the position of Quality Manager-Paper Division after 34 years of service to Sonoco. He was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club where he served as treasurer for many years. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church serving on the Building and Grounds Committee. He could often be seen at the church working on various projects and was always willing to share his knowledge and skills. A man of many talents, in his spare time, you could find him in the yard gardening, reading, working on cars of family and friends and was meticulous about planning family vacations and trips.
In addition to family above he was also preceded in death by 2 daughters-in-law, Lori J. Spears and Blanche H. Spears.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Patricia Kirby Spears of Hartsville, daughter Athena Spears of Hartsville, sons Grover
A. "Ron" Spears Jr. of Williamston, John A. (Denise) Spears of Cheraw, and daughter-in-law Joyce F. Spears of Hartsville.
Mr. Spears had the following grandchildren: Rachel (Sterling Barfield) Spears, Daniel (Rebecca) Moree, Jason (Melinda) Spears all of Hartsville; Brittany (Jonny) Bridges, Kayla (Michael Walters) Kearns and Bradley Spears, all of Cheraw; Megan (Kayge Truax) Kearns, Jerry (Jolynn Cullion) Kearns all of Ohio; Jennifer Parnell, and Julie (Nathan) Tollison both of Williamston.
In addition to his grandchildren, Mr. Spears was blessed to have had 20 great grandchildren.
The family will host a visitation at Norton Funeral home on Tuesday, May 9th, 2023 from 5-7pm. The funeral will be on Wednesday May 10, 2023 at 2pm at Norton Funeral Home with burial to follow at Magnolia Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society or The Hartsville Rescue Squad.
