Gretchen Schlitz Walker, 82, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at her home on October 2, 2024, after a brief battle with lung cancer. Born on October 20, 1941, in New Haven, CT, Gretchen lived a life filled with enthusiasm, kindness, and love for those around her.
Gretchen graduated from Newark High School, where she made cherished lifelong friendships, and was a proud graduate of the University of Delaware. She spent many years as an elementary school teacher, making a lasting impact on her students before retiring from Leeds Elementary School. Known for her boundless energy and warmth, Gretchen never met a stranger?she made friends wherever she went and brought joy to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
A lover of life's simple pleasures, Gretchen loved spending time in Rehoboth Beach. She enjoyed traveling, reading, dancing, and shared a special bond with her beloved dog, Max.
Gretchen was preceded in death by her beloved husbands, Joseph (Schlitz) in 1988 and Ronald (Walker) in 2022, as well as her brothers, Jonathan Heuberger (Bobbi Jean) and Peter Heuberger (Jan). She is survived by her three sons, Steve, Jon (Shanna), and Matt (Ann) Schlitz, along with her grandchildren, Joe, Sam, Nova, Maggie, and Zephyr Schlitz, all of whom brought her great pride and happiness. She is also survived by her nieces, Keri, Megan, Tara, and Gretchen, who will always remember her love and spirit, as well as many dear friends.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at The Vero and AccentCare for their compassionate care and support during Gretchen's final days.
A memorial service to celebrate Gretchen's life will be held at R.T. Foard and Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE, on Thursday, October 10th. Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 12:00 p.m.
