Gregory Wells, 75, of West York, IL, passed away on October 23, 2022, at Regional Hospital in Terre Haute, IN. He was born December 30, 1946, in Robinson, IL, the son of LeRoy Wells, Jr. & AnnaDee (Bartlett) Wells, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Ross Wells; by his brother-in-law, Ronald Randall; and by his grandson, Isaac Piersall.
He married Sharon Green on December 26, 1965, and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Chad & Casandra Wells (Melrose, IL) and Heidi & Nathan Piersall (Anderson, TX); by his grandchildren, Clayton Wells, Mason & Madison Wells, Savanna & Garrett Pritts, Lainey Heleine, Chase Heleine, Brendan Piersall, Owen Piersall, and Graham Piersall; by his great-granddaughter, Kendall Kay Wells; by his sister, Sue Randle & Todd Callahan (Hutsonville, IL); as well as several nieces and nephews.
A 1965 graduate of Hutsonville High School, Greg would go on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps as a crew chief aboard a UH-34D helicopter during the Vietnam War. 13 months and 440 missions later, he had earned 2 Purple Hearts, 22 Air Medals, as well as a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Combat Aircrew Insignia Medal, a Winged "S" Award, and a Presidential Unit Citation, among others. The tenacity of spirit which enabled this dear man to take up his country's call in the name of liberty and justice continues to humble those he leaves behind to this day.
Back stateside, he spent countless hours working the family farm and also helped run Annapolis Grain for many years. Anyone who worked alongside him could attest to the fact that Greg could fix anything from farm equipment to his treasured 1957 Harley Davidson, which he had completely rebuilt! What's more, he was a creator at heart and had both the vision and the know-how to design and build anything he wanted, from implements to the very house he and his wife Sharon made into a home. It is a house that stands as a monument to Greg: stable and sturdy; a safe place filled with warmth.
Time and again throughout his life, he showed us what unconditional love could look like in practice. By humbly and selflessly giving of himself for the benefit of others, he gave us a picture of Jesus, who, in John 15:13, said, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." And that's exactly who Greg was: your best friend, someone you could count on, someone you could confide in, someone irrevocably in your corner. His family could bear witness to this, as they were the beneficiaries of not only his love and support but his unending patience and God-given wisdom as well.
Greg Wells lived his 75 years with honor and integrity. He was our hero, a man who represented the very best of our humanity. Though we grieve in the here and now, we will set our eyes ahead, resting on that same hope that he did, knowing we will see Greg again.
