Born April 12, 1935 in Franklin County, NC, Graham grew up working on his Grandmother's farm just outside of Louisburg, NC, where as a boy he enjoyed adventures with his cousin Thomas Hicks. He graduated from Benson High School in 1953 and entered North Carolina State University's Engineering Program. In 1956, he entered the United States Marine Corps earning the rank of Sergeant. He and MaeOmie were married at the First Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC in 1958, and they were stationed in Hawaii shortly thereafter. They were blessed with two children, Michele (born in 1960) and Phillip (born in 1962). Graham returned to North Carolina State University in 1962 and completed his Electrical Engineering degree. In 1965, he joined Corning Glass Works where he remained employed for thirty years, serving in several management positions. For eight of those years, Graham represented Corning with Optical Fibers in the United Kingdom, a time which he and MaeOmie cherished. He and his family lived in many locations during his time at Corning, including Raleigh, NC; Corning, NY; Sunnyvale, CA; Wilmington NC; and Christleton, Chester, England.
Graham was a fine man of the highest character, who was empathetic and made family and friends feel valued and loved. He was respected and hard working with an uncompromising moral compass. Graham lived a life of deep faith and was always very active in church. At the time of his death, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC where he and MaeOmie enjoyed their time in the Forum Sunday School class. Graham served as a Deacon in many churches, and he was a student of the Bible and Biblical history. He enjoyed singing and was a member of his high school choir in Benson and later in choirs in every city where he lived. His love of music eventually extended to serving on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Symphony for several years.
Graham had a lifelong passion for building and flying model aircraft, and he valued the friendship of other model aircraft enthusiasts in the Wilmington Quiet Fliers and Wilmington Model Flying Club. He enjoyed sailboats and sailing and especially loved sailing with his family on the Finger Lakes in New York State. He appreciated good company and a good, fried, southern style lunch at the Cape Fear Club of Wilmington. Graham also had a passion for collecting antiques and for learning the history of the pieces he acquired. He enjoyed fly fishing in Montana and the mountains of North Carolina with his son and had many other hobbies including reading, wood working, genealogy, and marksmanship. He could hit a quarter size spread at 100 yards with the ammunition he loaded himself. He enjoyed travelling and treasured the friendships with people he and MaeOmie met abroad.
Graham was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a gentleman with a brilliant mind, a quiet, loving spirit and a passion for life.
The funeral service in celebration of Graham's life will be held at the Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh on Saturday, March 13th at 1:00 pm.
