Gordon Douglas "Doug" Travis
Help us celebrate Gordon! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Gordon.
Gordon Douglas "Doug" Travis was born October 28, 1938, in Beaumont, Texas. Doug was the eldest son of Robert David and Bevelyn Wiggins Travis.
Doug was a fastidious, hard-working, problem-solving young man. He loved all things mechanical and took every vocational education class he could while attending South Park High School in Beaumont. He graduated in 1957, the same year he met Rita Ann Guidry. Rita "set her cap" for this "new guy" working at Wiggins Mobil Service Station, and as Rita said, "The course of history was forever changed." Doug and Rita were married in 1959.
While raising a young family, Doug attended Lamar University, earning his BBA degree in 1970. His mechanical knowledge and attention to detail provided the foundation to succeed in a long career in the utility industry at Gulf States Utilities, Brown and Root, and Houston Lighting and Power.
In 1995, Rita and Doug retired to Fredericksburg. During his retirement, Doug enjoyed collecting and working on classic cars and retreating to the mountains of Colorado.
One of his primary goals in life was to provide a solid future for his children and grandchildren. He and Rita accomplished that and many other of their life goals during 57 years of marriage.
Doug fought courageously in his battle with metastatic melanoma and passed peacefully September 28, 2021.
Doug will be forever remembered for his ability and willingness to plan and execute, teaching his family to have a "Can Do, Will Do" attitude and strong work ethic. No one having met Doug, walked away without learning something.
Doug was preceded in death by his wife Rita and is survived by his younger brother Thomas Chester Travis, son James Douglas Travis, his spouse Tricia Travis, daughter Paige Travis Conn and three grandchildren, Kaitlin Elizabeth Travis, Avery Blaine (Conn) Thompson and Dalton Travis Conn.
Services will be held Thursday, October 14 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, Texas. Visitation 1:00, Rosary 1:30, Funeral mass 2:00, followed by a celebration gathering in the St. Mary's Holy Family Center.
In lieu of flowers, Doug asks that donations be made to Hill Country Memorial Hospice and Mercy Chefs.
