Gladys Carlisle
Help us celebrate Gladys! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Gladys.
Gladys was born on December 29, 1931 to Marie Lillian Anderson and Gerhart Johnson in Polk County, Tillton Junction, MN. She was the third child out of seven children. Her father, Gerhart, passed away just days before her 7th birthday at Christmas time. She loved him very much. Her mother remarried a few years later to a wonderful, loving man, Henry Camp. He was known as Henry or Bus or Grampa Camp. They added two more children to the family, a brother and a sister for Gladys to love.
At about the age of 16, Gladys met Charles "Charlie" Carlisle. On March 17, 1950, she married the love of her life in Minneapolis, MN. They resided around the Bloomington area where all four of their children were born. A son, Larry and three daughters Arlene, Dawn and Brenda. Around 1962, Gladys and Charlie moved their family to Two Harbors, MN.
Gladys learned about hard work at a very early age. She held a multitude of jobs; cook, waitress, factory worker, hospital, office and retail clerk. Gladys managed cabins and cleaning around Lake Superior, but the most interesting job to her children was when she worked at a mink ranch scraping pelts.
Gladys was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Two Harbors, MN. Involved with and member of the Moose Lodge, VFW and Legion Auxiliary. Gladys enjoyed bowling, dancing and having a cocktail with friends.
Gladys always regretted having to leave school early. At the age of fifty-four, Gladys went back to school to get her GED. We were all very proud of her.
