Gilbert Von Vreckin died peacefully at home on 5/12/23 at the age of 85. He was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to The Villages, FL in 2004. Gil had an illustrious career in aviation with Rockwell International and Cessna. Upon leaving the corporate arena, he became a private charter pilot for the Pittsburgh Steelers Rooney family. He accomplished over 40,000 hours in 12 different airplane ratings and held an ATP pilot transport license. In his younger days, he enjoyed skiing, traveling, and socializing with friends. During his retirement years, he frequently played golf and water aerobics, was an avid Steelers fan, and a member of The Villages Pittsburgh club.
Gilbert is survived by his love of 42 years, Marty Machamer, and his three children Amy (Mike) Forbeck, Mark (Melody) Von Vreckin, and Joyce Von Vreckin, 4 grandchildren: Ben and Nathan Forbeck and Codey and Casey Von Vreckin. He was predeceased by his parents Loretta (Bayer) and Charles Von Vreckin of McKees Rocks, the mother of his children, Nancy Von Vreckin, his sister Gloria (Howard) Miller, and his brother Gerald (Kathy) Von Vreckin.
The extended family would like to thank The Villages Cornerstone Hospice and the personal caregivers that provided care and compassion throughout his illness. There will be a private family burial in Pittsburgh and a Celebration of Life in The Villages at a later date.
