Gertrude Hamlin Strickland, 98, of Americus, Georgia, passed away after a brief illness at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany February 4, 2023.
She was born in Webster County February 17, 1924, to Robert Arthur Hamlin and Maggie Massey Hamlin. She was the youngest of four children. After her father died, the family moved to Terrell County when she was seven. She attended grammar school in Bronwood and graduated from Parrott High School in 1941. In the fall of 1941 she attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia. But she returned home the day Pearl Harbor was bombed.
She married the late Reuben Calvin Strickland in 1942. They lived in Terrell County most of their married life. They moved to Albany, Georgia, in 1996. In 2017, Gertrude became a resident of Magnolia Manor Retirement Center in Americus, Georgia.
Gertrude is survived by a son, Leon A. Strickland (Diane) of Macon and a daughter Kay Strickland Heath (John) of Americus. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Andrea Strickland Bourne (Steve) of Rome, Georgia, Leann Heath Miller (Matt) of Americus, Georgia, and Jeff Strickland of Warner Robins, Georgia. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren. These are Emma Cate Bourne, Carson Shomaker, and Ava Shomaker all of Atlanta and Maddox Miller and Kayden Miller of Americus. Gertrude was predeceased by her husband in 2001.
Gertrude was a dental assistant for Dr. Loren Stapleton for much of her adult life. She worked and retired as an Instructor Tech at Terrell Lee Training Center in Dawson, Georgia. After retirement, Gertrude and Reuben began the Candy Kitchen business specializing in peanut and pecan brittle. Gertrude was the oldest member of Dawson First Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, February 7th at 2:00 at Parrott City Cemetery. Dr. John Walker, chaplain at Magnolia Manor, will officiate. Family will greet guests after the service. Donations may be made to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 504, Dawson, Georgia 39842.
